Welsh heritage receives £2m boost

A new scheme to preserve ten iconic cultural heritage sites in Wales is set to benefit from a £2m cash injection from the Welsh Assembly Government.
Funding for the Welsh Cultural Heritage Initiative will be set aside from the Welsh Assembly Government's Strategic Capital Investment Fund, and will also go towards making the ten sites safe and accessible for visitors. Seven sites to be included as part of the scheme have already been identified, with further locations yet to be announced as discussions continue with site owners. Among the sites already named to benefit from the funding is Nevern Castle in Pembrokeshire and Deganwy Castle in Conwy, north Wales.
The other confirmed sites include Glyndyfrdwy, Denbighshire; Sycharth, Powys; Cefn Caer in Pennal, near Machynlleth; Strata Florida, a Cistercian Abbey near Tregaron, Ceredigion; Abaty Cwmhir, near Llandrindod Wells, Powys; and Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd. The scheme is being led by Cadw, the assembly government's historic environment, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Heritage minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said: "The iconic sites selected are key in telling the story of Wales and are strongly linked with our nationhood, language and culture. "I'm confident people will feel a stronger connection with Wales and our story when visiting these sties. They play a crucial role in giving us a sense of place and purpose.
