Standards published to reduce injuries at trampoline parks

by Deven Pamben | 23 Mar 2017

Guidance covering the construction of indoor trampoline parks, as well as operating and maintenance requirements, has been published by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The institution's Publicly Available Standard (PAS) provides detailed guidance that includes recommended heights of jump towers and how to construct a pit to avoid contact with the floor.

The standards, which are voluntary, have been created to support trampoline park operators, designers, manufacturers and installers, as well as inspection and enforcement bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and environmental health officers.

As reported by the BBC last week, 13 UK ambulance trusts confirmed that 30 trampoline parks required 315 call outs between April 2015 and April 2016. There are around 150 parks in the UK.

International Association of Trampoline Parks (IATP) members worked with the BSI steering group, which included the Royal Society of Protection of Accidents, British Gymnastics, environmental health officers, the Health and Safety Executive, constructers and operators to produce standards that will help minimise the risks to park users and ensure safety.

Peter Brown, Freedome managing director, has spent the past 20 years working in the adventure activity industry. He is a founding member of the UK subcommittee of the IATP, the first chair of the steering group and the technical author of the British standard.

He said: “Demand for trampoline parks has grown exponentially in a very short space of time, with trampoline park openings increasing by 3,000 per cent since 2014. However, the safety standards had not caught up with this demand. I am very pleased that we have managed to get the BSI PAS 5000 out so quickly creating something that will form the backbone of standards across the UK."

As of August, a park will need to comply to the BSI standards to be a member of the IATP.
