Queen resigns patronage to several sporting bodies

by Matthew Campelli | 21 Dec 2016

The Sport and Recreation Alliance and the British Cycling Federation are among the sporting bodies that the Queen will resign her patronage to going into her 91st year.

The UK’s longest-serving monarch – who is currently patron of more than 600 organisations – will also step down from Welsh Rugby Union, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the Rugby Football Union (RFU and the Rugby Football League (RFL).

Other members of the Royal Family will take up the patronages over the coming months. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has already been named the patron of the ASA.

“Her Majesty will continue to serve as patron to hundreds of charities and institutions but will now share this work with her family,” said a Buckingham Palace statement.

“This decision follows the example set by The Duke of Edinburgh who resigned from a number of patronages on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2011.”

The Queen was 90 earlier this year.
