Partial reopening for Shanghai Disneyland as coronavirus keeps theme parks shut

Disney has today partially reopened its Shanghai resort, though its theme parks continue to remain shut under strict government conditions in an attempt to halt the spread of coronavirus.

As of 9 March, Shanghai Disney Resort has partially resumed operations, with a limited number of shopping, dining, and recreational experiences available in Disneytown, Wishing Star Park and Shanghai Disneyland Hotel. According to Disney, each of these resort locations will operate under limited capacity and reduced hours of operation.

"The resort will provide an extensive range of measures, designed to ensure a safe and healthy experience for all guests, cast members and Disneytown tenant employees, including strict and comprehensive approaches on sanitisation, disinfection and cleanliness," said a statement from the operator.

"In accordance with relevant regulations, every guest entering Shanghai Disney Resort will be required to undergo temperature screening procedures upon their arrival, will need to present their Health QR Code when entering dining venues, and will be required to wear a mask during their entire visit. Guests will also be reminded to maintain respectful social distances at all times while in stores, queues and restaurants."

This marks the first time Disney will have opened any part of its Shanghai resort since late January, and the first reopening of any of its resorts in Asia, which have all shut down as a preventative measure to stop the spread of the virus. Tokyo Disneyland closed on 29 February after Japan's government recommended that big gatherings and events be curtailed for at least two weeks. The park is scheduled to reopen on 16 March, though that will depend on the spread of the virus.

Following its park closures, Disney predicted that the outbreak would result in an estimated US$280m (€253.9m, €253.8m, £214.5m) loss based on a two-month period. That number could rise however if the virus is active for a longer period.
