Adidas could match Google Fit partnership with new wearable device

Details have emerged suggesting that Adidas is closing in on the launch of a new wearable fitness product, as the sportswear giant seeks to boost its presence in the booming technology marketplace.

A number of reports online are laying claim to a device named the MiCoach FitSmart band, with pictures alluding to a device featuring an LED dot-matrix-style display and heart rate monitor.

The name of the new device was picked up through a trademark filing and an FCC listing, while a product image is also being showcased by Keller Sports in the US.

If the details do prove correct, the FitSmart band would follow on from the company’s MiCoach SmartRun watch – featuring GPS capabilities and heart rate monitoring too.

Despite not confirming the product, Adidas has made an announcement that it plans to partner with the new Google Fit platform, which seeks to aggregate and store health and fitness data collected by users through wearable tech.

"Adidas, the leader in global sports, will provide open access to its miCoach interactive training platform. For the first time, wearable sensors, workout data and professional grade training plans will be connected from adidas miCoach to Google Fit,” said the global sports giant, according to Tech Radar.

"The initial three miCoach devices planned for integration into Google Fit will be; Speed Cell, X.Cell and the Smart Run sport watch."

The boom in the wearable tech marketplace has seen a scramble for dominance in the sector, with being one of the sports brand to make the earliest movements.

Since its early success with the FuelBand, the company has now turned its focus to software development, having established its own R&D lab in California.
