Aman hotel to open in New York's iconic Crown Building, complete with dramatic three-storey spa

by Jane Kitchen | 27 Oct 2017

Aman has unveiled details of its planned New York property, set to open in 2020 in the heart of Manhattan.

Aman New York will be housed in the 1921 Crown Building on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street overlooking Central Park, and will include a three-storey, 2,000sq m (21,528sq ft) Aman Spa.

The 26-storey Crown Building – designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, who also designed New York’s Grand Central Station – is one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in New York, and was formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art. It will be transformed by architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston, who has worked on several other Aman resorts, including Amanyara in the Turks and Caicos, Amanwana in Indonesia, Aman Sveti Stefan in Montenegro, and Aman Venice.

Aman New York will occupy the entire Crown Building excluding the retail space on the first three floors, and will include 83 rooms and suites, as well as Aman’s first urban residences.

Gathy will celebrate the brand’s philosophy of “creating sanctuaries beyond commonplace notions of luxury” while paying homage to the building’s architecture and history.

The Aman Spa will be located on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors, and will be open to guests, residents and Aman Club members. The centrepiece of the spa will be a dramatic 25m (82ft) indoor swimming pool surrounded by fire pits and alcoves of double daybeds. Two Spa Houses will include comprehensive private facilities including a double treatment room, sauna and steam rooms complemented by hot and cold plunge pools, as well as an outdoor terrace with cabana, daybed and fireplace.

“Aman has always sought the finest locations in the world, and we recently expanded our vision to include select cities,” said Vladislav Doronin, chair and CEO of Aman. “The Crown Building represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring Aman to New York, the world’s greatest and most dynamic city. We are honoured to be the stewards of an exciting new chapter in this iconic building’s legacy.”

A dramatic 10th floor double-height Sky Lobby will feature multi-layers of textured ceiling panels in muted tones that hint at Aman’s Asian roots, interpreted for an urban environment. Each of the 83 guest rooms will have a functioning fireplace and a subtle design narrative will include nuanced hues and lighting designed to cocoon guests.

A 10th floor wraparound garden terrace will include a bar with panoramic views of Central Park and a cigar bar. The hotel will also include a piano bar, two restaurants, wine library and a subterranean jazz club.

“As with all Amans, we are deeply connected to our community, and Aman New York will be no exception,” said Doronin. “We look forward to absorbing the vibrant energy that is New York and infusing it with our own unique formula, resulting in an enriching and lively guest experience that will redefine hospitality.”
