Zaha Hadid retrospective planned for Venice Architecture Biennale
Venetian glassmaking association Fondazione Berengo is to host a retrospective of the work of Zaha Hadid, following the architect's death in March at the age of 65.
The exhibition will take place Venice’s neo-Gothic Palazzo Franchetti, close to the Grand Canal, during the city’s architecture Biennale from 28 May to 27 November.
Hadid’s accomplishments, including recently-completed structures and projects currently under construction, will be represented in the 500sq m (5,400sq ft) exhibition space, thematically sub-divided in 10 different rooms.
Paintings, drawings, models and video installations will provide a comprehensive overview of her work, including her furniture and jewellery designs.
According to the New York Times, the foundation – which had been collaborating with Hadid on a series of glass sculptures – had arranged with Hadid to organise a small, research-focused show on the technologies and computational design methods her studio uses in its work. After her death, the decision was made to change the show into a retrospective.
Manon Janssens, head of exhibitions at Zaha Hadid Architects, told the Times: “We felt the responsibility to address the fact that, unfortunately, Zaha passed away. We couldn’t just have the show as it was.”
Adriano Berengo, president of Fondazione Berengo, said: “Visitors to the exhibition will have a greater understanding of Zaha Hadid’s pioneering vision that redefined architecture and design for the 21st century and captured imaginations across the globe. Although I work in the art world and Dame Zaha Hadid's excellence was architecture, her work is also imbued with art, that patina that makes everything eternal, including the creator herself."
The Iraqi-born British architect’s death from a heart attack in Miami shocked the industry. Tributes have poured in from around the world celebrating Hadid’s life and achievements.
