V&A at Dundee designs unveiled

Six potential designs for a new landmark building that will 'dominate' Dundee's waterfront and house the city's planned Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum have been unveiled.

An exhibition is to open at the University of Abertay Dundee's library tomorrow (29 September) to allow members of the public to view the proposals drawn up by shortlisted design teams. Vienna, Austria-based Delugan Meissl Associated Architects; Kengo Kuma and Associates of Tokyo, Japan; Snøhetta, Oslo, Norway; and Sutherland Hussey Architects of Edinburgh have produced designs.

REX and Steven Holl Architects - both based in New York, US - are also among design teams to be shortlisted following an international competition held earlier this year. The new V&A attraction will be located at Craig Harbour and is to be delivered by Design Dundee - a partnership between the museum; the University of Abertay Dundee and the University of Dundee.

Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise are also involved with the scheme, which aims to create a "rich and inspiring" resource for design and creativity at the heart of the city's revamped waterfront. Design Dundee chair Lesley Knox said: "We hope as many people as possible visit the exhibition and the website and express their opinions on the models and designs.

"I am sure people will see things they really love and some will also have opinions that go the other way. But the key thing is that they make their opinions known, as it will feed into the jury panel's decision." Dundee City Council director of city development Mike Galloway added: "Our brief called for outstanding design to fit an outstanding location and I think the teams have lived up to that."
