Temporary tennis venue looking to stop rain with radical new construction

A specially designed domed roof that can be taken down and put back up again, is being built ahead of the Brodies Champions of Tennis competition, at Raeburn Place, in June. The construction feat is very complex, owing to the fact that it will be a shelter which is open to the wind yet at the same time has no foundations to anchor it down while also leaving no lasting damage to the ground, which is usually a rugby pitch. "The temporary court and seating will be built on our second XV pitch," said Frank Spratt, executive chair for the Edinburgh Academicals. "There will be temporary paths laid down which will hopefully reduce the damage from vehicles and people wandering over the ground. The main issue is whether the grass under these temporary structures will be killed off or not. We hope, as they are down for a limited period, that the grass will recover before we start playing again in August." Airsculpt - a Wiltshire based company, which specialises in design, engineering and construction of fabric architecture, will build the roof of the temporary 2,500 seater stadium in Edinburgh which will protect the court but leave the spectators facing the elements.
