New renderings showcase Gensler's design for open-air Los Angeles FC stadium
US Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise Los Angeles FC have released new images of their forthcoming stadium, designed by architects and engineers Gensler.
The images reveal new perspectives of the Banc of California Stadium, and particularly its semi-transparent curving roof, which will make the building an instantly recognisable landmark for driver’s passing on the adjacent freeway.
Ground was broken on the US$250m (€234.8m, £204.5m) project in August 2016, and construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2018 MLS season, when the newly-formed team will join the league, competing against the likes of city rival LA Galaxy.
The 22,000 capacity stadium will be the first, new open-air stadium in LA since 1962. According to the club, it will “bring more than US$350m (€328m, £287m) in private investment" to the south of the city, with the development including a large public plaza, restaurants, retail store, conference and event centres and leisure facilities.
The team has a star-studded ownership team, with Hollywood actor Will Ferrell, former basketball star Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, self-help guru Tony Robbins and film producer Peter Guber all holding equity.
When Los Angeles FC finally kicks off in 2018, it will be the second MLS team competing in the league from the city alongside the well-established LA Galaxy.
