Jean Philippe Nuel transforms Roman palazzo into five-star resort

by Andrew Manns | 22 Apr 2019
Our project is a dialogue between heritage and modernity.
– Jean Philippe Nuel

Sofitel Villa Borghese Rome is on track to launch this summer, following an extensive renovation by French architect and designer Jean Philippe Nuel.

Situated near the city centre, amidst the Trevi Fountain, Villa Medici, and the Spanish Steps, the refurbished 19th-century building features 78 rooms and suites with Hermès amenities, a rooftop restaurant, and a fitness centre.

Renderings of the project show that some guest quarters will feature quadratura ceilings as well as furnishings and decorative accents that reflect the Eternal City's neoclassical architecture.

Wellness offerings at the soon-to-open retreat include a sleep menu, an in-room service that changes bathrooms into what Sofitel has called "a private sanctuary"; and a wellness programme consisting of complimentary, aromatherapy-enhanced baths.

"Our project," explained Nuel, "is creating a dialogue between the French elegance composed of Classicism details, and the refinement and the Italian Baroque, which is full of opulence and generosity."

He continued: "It is also a dialogue between heritage and modernity, white and luminous colours, city and garden."

The Villa Borghese is scheduled to open its doors on 1 July.

Sofitel, a subsidiary brand of international hospitality company Accor Hotels, currently operates over 120 hospitality properties worldwide.
