ZMMA to design London museum project

London-based Zombory-Moldovan Moore Architects (ZMMA) has been appointed by the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum to design its new Europe 1600-1800 Galleries.

The scheme is the largest gallery revamp to be undertaken as part of the V&A's FuturePlan programme, which will lead to the transformation of the iconic London heritage attraction. Located at basement level along the Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road, the galleries have access points fro both the Grand Entrance and Tunnel Entrance.

The refurbishment will include the removal of 1970s cladding to uncover the original Aston Webb architecture, opening up more than 350sq m (3,767sq ft) of unused display space. Long-hidden windows running around the outside of the galleries are to be reinstated, with ZMMA to also introduce sustainable, low-energy climate control within the building.

Around 1,000 objects exploring European art and design from between 1600-1800 will go on display in the revamped galleries, including examples of textiles, painting and ceramics. V&A director of projects, design and estate, Moira Gemmill said: "As well as covering all the practical considerations of displaying sensitive and precious objects in appropriate conditions, [ZMMA's] concept emphasises the luxuriousness of the collection and theatricality of the period."

The new-look galleries are scheduled to open in 2014, with the Heritage Lottery Fund having awarded a first round pass towards a full £4.76m grant for the scheme. Image: ZMMA
