Waking the Dragon will provide a 'cultural gateway' to North Wales
A new 64m (208ft) Welsh dragon landmark is to be developed on a site between Llangollen and Wrexham, North Wales, after councillors approved the scheme.
Local businessman Simon Wingett is behind the Waking the Dragon proposals, which have been given the green light by Wrexham Council's planning committee. Comprising a 23.5m (77.1ft) dragon sculpture located on top of a 41.5m (136.2ft) concrete tower, the landmark will feature a public viewing platform overlooking the English border.
A 2,150sq m (23,142sq ft) cultural centre and landscaped gardens will also form part of the development, a decision on which had been deferred last month. Plans were originally submitted in July 2010, although councillors required more details of the project's business case and traffic issues before making a final decision.
