REVEALED: World Design Rankings rate design and architectural high-flyers

The US has taken first place in the updated World Design Rankings, which rates countries based on the number of awards won by their citizens in international arts, architecture and design competitions.

The rankings aim to promote global design culture through advocating good design and highlighting the design potential of countries worldwide. The list is based on the aggregated scores of participants from 2010 to the present day.

At the time of writing, artists, designers and architects in the US have won 252 awards globally. While product designers account for most of the country's awards, top-ranking leisure designers and architects include Yu-Ngok Lo, designer of an artisan barbecue restaurant in Macau, China, and the Design Office Takebayashi Scroggin, creators of the concept design for a children's museum in Louisville, US..

Turkey and Hong Kong round up the top three entries in the list of 83 represented countries and territories. In 2015, China climbed from seventh to fifth position and Greece joined the top 10 for the first time.

The World Design Rankings also list the most-awarded architects globally. At the present time, the top three are Lebanese studio MZ Architects, Kuwait firm AGi Architects and Hong Kong-based Aedas.

MZ are the design team behind the multi-billion pound Eko Atlantic mixed-use development in Lagos, Nigeria and The Wall Stadium in Doha, Qatar – which was awarded the Sports and Stadiums Future Project Award at last year's Architectural Review Awards.

AGi are currently developing Forepeak; a hotel complex and ship-building complex in Qatar. Meanwhile Bravo Park Place, an Aedas-designed mixed-use project, recently launched in Guangzhou, China.
