WAF Awards 2011 shortlist announced

A soccer school in Soweto, South Africa, and a tree hotel in Sweden are among some of the schemes to be shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2011.

The fourth annual awards attracted a record number of entries, with more than 700 from 59 countries across the world seeking to be crowned World Building of the Year 2011. UK projects shortlisted include Holburne Museum of Art, Bath (Eric Parry Architects); W London hotel (Jestico + Whiles); and the Museum of Liverpool (3xN).

Silverstone's new pit and paddock complex in Northamptonshire (Populous) is also one of the shortlisted UK entries, with the awards divided into three main sections. Each section - Completed Buildings; Structural Design; and Future Projects - have up to 16 categories, while a jury led by Michael Sorkin will decide the World Building of the Year.

Shortlisted practices will present designs live to international judging panels and delegates at the WAF in Barcelona, Spain, between 2 and 4 November. Meanwhile, members of the public also have the chance to vote for the new People's Choice Award for the first time, which is supported by openbuildings.com.

"It's encouraging that the quality of this year's entries is the highest we've ever seen and we look forward to seeing which projects both the judges select as the winners." Image: Jestico + Whiles' design for W London has been shortlisted
