Visitor centre upgrade for Housesteads

by Helen Patenall | 21 May 2009

Housesteads Roman Fort, which is part of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site near Bardon Mill, Northumberland, is set to be transformed over the next five years in a bid to improve the visitor experience.

The National Trust and English Heritage will work with Hadrian's Wall Heritage and Gareth Hoskins Architects - designers of the award-winning Culloden Battlefield visitor centre in Scotland - to create enhanced displays showcasing some of the most significant artefacts discovered at the site as well as improved educational and community facilities.

Jeremy Reed, English Heritage's visitor operations director for the North of England, said: "Over the summer, we've asked visitors what they want to see at Housesteads and we are committed to realising their and our ambitions.

"The new visitor experience will see the magnificent fort become a first-class tourist destination, and one which will bring benefits to the whole of the north east."

David Ronn, regional director for The National Trust in Yorkshire & the North East, added: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with English Heritage to enhance everyone's experience of Housesteads. With the help of the architects we can now develop our ideas further and seek external support to deliver our vision."

Funding for the project is being sought from external sources, including public bodies and individual philanthropists.
