RAF Museum unveils 'beacon' project
The Royal Air Force (RAF) Museum has unveiled plans to develop a new landmark exhibition building dedicated to the Battle of Britain at Hendon, North London.
Under the proposals drawn up by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the proposed Battle of Britain Beacon will feature a tapered body and will be 116m (350ft) high - taller than London's Big Ben. The beacon scheme - revealed ahead of the 70th anniversary of the historic World War II battle - is designed to allow wider public access to the museum's collection of Battle of Britain aircraft.
An exhibition using audio-visual and holographic displays will set the scene for the battle and the Blitz, before visitors are transported to the top of the building to stand amid a reconstructed dogfight. Plans also include an exterior viewing platform overlooking the City of London before visitors are transported back down to ground level with the story of the Battle being told via exhibits in the central well.
The museum has now launched a consultation, while trustees have confirmed that the scheme will only go ahead if the required private sector funding can be obtained. A RAF Museum spokesperson said: "The exciting concept will allow wider public access and ensure that the museum's unique collection of Battle of Britain aircraft, memorabilia and archives is preserved for the education and enjoyment of future generations."
