London's Shard officially opens to become Europe's tallest building

The Shard, a new £2bn (US$3.1bn, EUR2.5bn) mixed-use development designed by Renzo Piano, has become one of Europe's tallest buildings after its official opening in London, UK.

Dignitaries such as HRH Prince Andrew and His Excellency Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar, attended the inauguration event yesterday (5 July).

A spectacular laser and lightshow marked the opening of The Shard, which was designed in conjunction with Richard Rogers and towers above the city's London Bridge Quarter.

The event marked the completion of the exterior of the 310m (1,016 ft)-high building, which houses a public viewing gallery between floors 68 and 72 - due to open next year.

Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard, London is also scheduled to open next year between floors 34 and 52, with a signature 6,030sq ft (560sq m) CHI spa located on the 52nd floor.

An indoor swimming pool; fitness centre; and a whirlpool will also be among the new hotel's amenities. Elsewhere, The Shard will include restaurants and extensive office space.
