Glasgow's £74m Museum of Transport to open next week

The Zaha Hadid-designed Museum of Transport in Glasgow - also called the Riverside Museum - will open its doors to the public next week (21 June).

The £74m attraction will be operated on behalf of the property owner Glasgow City Council by charitable trust Glasgow Life, formerly called Culture and Sport Glasgow which was rebranded last year.

The new museum building will house more than 3,000 exhibits across 150 displays and is Museum of Transport's third home since opening in the 1960s.

Funding for the museum has come from a number of sources, with Glasgow City Council investing more than £51m and a further £4.5m coming from private donations. The Heritage Lottery Fund also awarded more than £18m towards the project.

Glasgow Life hopes that the new building will increase the number of visitors to the collection from 500,000 a year to around 800,000.

BAM Construction started work on site in 2007, with interiors and theming company Mivan appointed to deliver the fit-out of the new attraction.
