Populous renderings for Minnesota United stadium unveiled
Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise Minnesota United has unveiled renderings for its proposed Populous-designed stadium.
The design of the 20,000-capacity stadium includes a 360-degree canopy to protect fans and players from poor weather and reduce light and noise spilling into the surrounding neighbourhood.
Three hospitality clubs, a field heating system, high-density wifi and a 1,600sq ft (148.6sq m) retail store will be built within the US$150m (£107.1m, €137.9m) arena. It will also have a variety of suites and club boxes, and has been sustainably designed to “minimise environmental impact and energy use”.
“This world-class venue will not only offer our fans an iconic professional soccer experience, but also provide our team with the necessary tools to establish themselves as a top-tier professional club,” said Minnesota United owner William McGuire.
“We want this facility to be a cornerstone of professional soccer throughout our state and the north. We expect this facility to serve as a catalyst for additional development that inspires greater livability.”
Construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2018 MLS season. Minnesota United was granted a place in the league in 2015.
The 34.5 acre site around the stadium will be redeveloped to include a mixed-use village which will home retail, office, residential, hospitality, entertainment, food and beverage establishments.
