Electric Hotel to embark on UK tour

Electric Hotel - a new 'pop-up' temporary dance work designed to involve the audience in a voyeur role - is set to embark on a UK tour from 7 May.

London's Sadler's Wells theatre and outdoor festival consortium Without Walls co-commissioned the performance, which will be taking place in a number of public open spaces. Debuting at Millennium Place in Norwich between 7-9 May, the Electric Hotel concept will see temporary four-storey structures built and will use dance and sound to engage audiences.

Members of the audience will see events unfold and use sound technology to gain an insight into the lives of the hotel's 'guests' as part of the experience. The hotel structure - measuring 20m (66ft) wide and 14m (46ft) high - will feature at The Level, Brighton; Waterfront Square in Bristol; and at the Kings Cross Central development in London.

David Rosenberg, director and co-founder of theatre company Shunt, is also involved with the project, which will be produced by Fuel. Arts Council England and a Wellcome Trust Arts Award have funded the production. Sadler's Wells artistic director and chief executive Alistair Spalding said: "Electric Hotel sees Sadler's Wells continuing its endeavour to take dance outside the walls of the theatre to unusual and unexpected places.

"And Electric Hotel couldn't be more unusual and unexpected; in London, this weird and wonderful residence appears against the dramatic backdrop of the last remaining Victorian ironwork gas holder at King's Cross Central." Rosenberg added: "You look at a building and you see a couple arguing or someone dancing alone in their room. You might imagine you know what's going on but you're probably wrong.

"At the heart of this project is the desire to see individuals in their private spaces lit by the same newsflash or electrical storm. They're alone but then suddenly part of a picture that they're unaware of." After debuting in Norwich, the work moves to Brighton (14-15 May), Bristol (19-22 May) and then London (2-19 June), before Stockton-on-Tees at the end of July.
