Plans for a redevelopment of the Tropicana site in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, appear to have collapsed after the last remaining bidder withdrew from the scheme.

Last month, the Nightingale Group was awarded exclusive rights to develop the seafront site by North Somerset Council (NSC) after Havard Tisdale withdrew its bid in January. The Nightingale Group - working alongside FaulknerBrowns Architects, Serco and DTZ - had proposed a new indoor adventure water park with children's play pool.

A fitness pool, spa and health suite; adventure ice skating; and a cinema had also been put forward as part of the plans, which have now been withdrawn. Richard Nightingale of the Nightingale Group told the BBC: "It was always important to us that we build a facility that residents actually want, and that our proposal would benefit Weston for years to come.

"It has now become clear to us that, sadly, this will not happen, and we have therefore been forced to withdraw accordingly." NSC leader Nigel Ashton said: "People should know that the council has never rejected his proposals and senior members were keen to discuss real options for his need to provide parking.

"This included a stand-alone car park development adjacent to the site. However, Mr Nightingale turned down all opportunities to discuss these options."
