Belfast public artwork nears completion
One of the largest public artworks commissioned in Northern Ireland - the 37.5m (123ft)-tall RISE - is nearing completion above Belfast's Broadway roundabout.
The work has been produced by Nottingham-based artist Wolfgang Buttress and features two globes - one inside the other - to symbolise the rising of the sun. Rasharkin-based M Hasson and Sons has manufactured the 65,000 individual parts that comprise the globes, with construction work due for completion later this month.
The inner globe - 15m (49ft) in diameter - has already been completed and the outer globe is now being put together. Once the bottom half is finished, the inner globe will be placed inside. Once RISE is fully assembled, it is expected that it will be visible to 65,000 users of the M1 and Westlink on a daily basis, as well as 2.5 million passengers flying in and out of George Best City Airport.
