AFC Wimbledon submits stadium plans for Plough Lane site

AFC Wimbledon has submitted a planning application to Merton Council for a new stadium at Plough Lane in South London.

The League Two football club is planning to build a 11,000-capacity stadium on the site of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium – a location the club calls its “spiritual home”.

The application has been submitted in partnership with residential builder Galliard Homes and seeks permission to build 600 residential units along with retail and commercial space and a leisure club.

Detailed plans will not be available until the council has completed its verification process, which is expected to take until the end of the year. The plans will then be made available for public scrutiny.

According to AFC Wimbledon CEO Erik Samuelson, the master plan seeks to revitalise the Greyhound Stadium area of Merton and bring economic benefits and jobs to the area – as well as add community facilities for local residents to utilise.

Samuelson said: “This is the culmination of 18 months intensive work for the club, Galliard Homes, and our team of specialist advisers. It’s an extremely comprehensive proposal covering every aspect of the development and associated issues.”

AFC Wimbledon currently plays its home games at the 4,800-capacity Kingsmeadow stadium, which it shares with semi professional club Kingstonian FC.

AFC Wimbledon was founded by fans of Wimbledon FC (WFC) in 2002 after WFC moved to Milton Keynes and was renamed as Milton Keynes Dons.
