Lagula Arquitectes designs new wellness centre for PGA Catalunya golf resort in Spain

– Greg Payne
Golf resort, PGA Catalunya, will unveil its brand new Wellness Centre in Girona, Spain, on 16 April, following a €5m (£4.3m, US$5.9m) investment.
Set in 540 hectares of Mediterranean Forest, PGA Catalunya offers a holistic retreat that integrates physical and mental health into a space that nurtures fulfilment through golf, leisure and low-density living.
With the opening of the 1,000sq m Wellness Centre, PGA Catalunya wants to position itself as one of the leading wellness destinations in Europe.
Located at the heart of the resort, the Wellness Centre has been designed by Lagula Arquitectes and takes inspiration from the Japanese principles of unaltered natural beauty, quiet solitude and simplicity, blending seamlessly with the landscape and surrounding gardens.
Greg Payne who’s worked for leading spa operators such as Aman and InterContinental has been instrumental in supporting the project’s inception and has overseen the concept-planning, financial, design and pre-opening phases.
Payne said the vision for the facility was to develop an approach that moves beyond spa and treats guests as elite athletes using the latest technology and integrating therapies with nutrition, movement and recovery facilities.
At the same time, he wanted to fuse this with spas’ traditional high service and not switch off leisure guests looking for a relaxing treatment.
The destination will provide a luxury integrated wellness experience, blending traditional spa therapies with the added benefits of medically-backed therapies normally only accessible at clinics or elite athletic facilities.
This will include whole-body Mecotec cryotherapy chambers, photobiomodulation and hyperbaric oxygen services and IV infusions in collaboration with NADclinic London and integrative medicine specialist Dr Saskia Kloppenburg.
PGA Catalunya is also collaborating with nutritionist Mireia Cervera to develop specific nutritional programmes alongside PGA Catalunya’s chef David Vives.
Split into Celebration and Vitality concepts, the treatment menu will focus on movement, recovery, relaxation and traditional and cutting-edge therapies.
Guests will be offered day experiences and residential programmes, tailored to each individual guest’s needs, from half-days to week-long programmes with focuses such as detox, immunity, nutrition and anti-ageing.
The Wellness Centre will feature eight single treatment rooms and one for couples, all equipped with Oakworks treatment beds.
“Our innovative and integrated approach allows us to combine the most ancient treatments with avant-garde therapies with carefully selected partners that share our philosophy and approach to wellbeing,” remarked Núria Camins, wellness manager.
Leading the way in next-generation wellness architecture and property design, PGA Catalunya recently also unveiled its latest luxury real estate offering – the WELL Villa concept designed to provide the homeowner with a true holistic living experience.
