3D-printed luxury eco-resort and spa to open in Mozambique

by Megan Whitby | 06 Mar 2020
We’ve used design as a tool, not as a style, to ensure Kisawa is integrated, both culturally and environmentally into Mozambique
– Nina Flohr

The Kisawa Sanctuary luxury eco-resort and spa in Mozambique is being billed as the world’s first resort to be 3D printed, with a sand-and-sea-water mortar piped in layers to create its structures.

The resort will be located on Benguerra Island, 14km (9mi) off the eastern coast of Africa and home to rich subtropical ecosystems.

Following the five-year construction process, the resort is due to open in Q2 2020 and will cover an area of 300ha (740ac).

Set within a landscape of beaches, forests and sand dunes, it4 will feature twelve one-, two- and three-bed bungalows, each with a personal beachfront, a swimming pool, a personal chef, a massage hut, an electric mini moke (small convertible) and e-bike.

There will also be a standalone spa specialising in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic offerings, a gym, a yoga and meditation pavilion, with a tennis court, watersports facilities and four dining venues.

“My mission for Kisawa is to create a level of hospitality and design that, to my knowledge, does not exist today, a place that inspires feelings of freedom and luxury born from nature, space and true privacy,” said founder Nina Flohr.

“We’ve used design as a tool, not as a style, to ensure Kisawa is integrated, both culturally and environmentally into Mozambique."

Work has been done to limit the resort’s impact on the surrounding environment with the help of its non-profit sister project the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies, a field marine station and laboratory which focuses on respect and maintenance of local culture and wildlife.
