Heneghan Peng Architects-designed Grand Egyptian Museum to open at end of 2020
The Grand Egyptian Museum, designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, has finally been given an opening date, with one of the year's biggest cultural openings now scheduled to open in the final quarter of 2020.
Construction of the museum began in 2006 but was delayed by the 2011 revolution in Egypt.
Around 90 per cent of construction work is now complete, though, and all of the planned artefact transfers to the site are also complete.
The museum is located in Giza at the edge of the desert between the pyramids and Cairo.
Covering an area of 100,000sq m (1.1 million sq ft), the building itself will contain 24,000sq m (260,000sq ft) of permanent exhibition space, a children’s museum, conference and education facilities, a large conservation centre and restaurants.
The full site will cover 50ha (124ac) and will include extensive gardens for visitors to explore.
