Work starts on 2012 Eton Manor venue
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has confirmed that all permanent venues at the Olympic Park are now under construction with the start of work at Eton Manor.
Mansells Construction Services has been appointed to deliver the new Eton Manor venue, which will provide aquatics training facilities during the 2012 Olympic Games with three full-size, temporary pools. A temporary synchronised swimming pool and water polo pool will also be created, before the venue is used to stage wheelchair tennis events at the Paralympic Games with seating for 15,000 spectators.
Initial groundworks at Eton Manor - designed by a Stanton Williams-led design team - got underway in spring, with the main construction phase now in progress. Foundations are due to be completed by autumn. ODA chair John Armitt said: "The start of work on Eton Manor is a significant milestone, the start of construction on the last permanent venue on the Olympic Park.
"Eton Manor will play a key role throughout the Games and leave behind a permanent facility which will benefit the local community for years to come." It is hoped the main sports building structure will be complete by the end of the year, while the installation of the five pools and the temporary structure that will house them is due to start by the end of 2011.
