Ageing Buckingham leisure centre set for £2.6m facelift
The Swan Pool and Leisure Centre in Buckingham recently began a £2.6m transformation project to revitalise services, backed by the local authority and a £500,000 grant from Sport England.
Having opened in 1996, the Everyone Active-operated leisure centre is beginning to show its age. Aylesbury Vale District Council’s investment will see the site receive a full makeover and a raft of new facilities. The project – which started last month – will see construction firm Balfour Beatty carry out the refurb in several stages to minimise disruption.
The facility is to benefit from:
• An enlarged and updated gym with the latest interactive Precor CV equipment, Watt Bikes, Total Gym GTS, Power Plate machines and Precor strength kit
• A new two-storey RockBox climbing facility
• A purpose-built crèche and new multi-use studio
• A refurbished and extended changing village with a new and separate dry side changing area
• An updated reception with a larger spectating area
• Various energy saving procedures and initiatives, including electric vehicle charging stations
“Swan Pool and Leisure Centre is a much loved but tired facility. This project will transform it into a welcoming, inspiring and sustainable space with top-class facilities and new activities,” said Everyone Active general manager James Ewart.
“We hope the refurbishment will encourage participation across Buckingham in a range of sports and healthy activities.”
Everyone Active has said it hopes to increase its membership base at the centre to 1,600 and boost overall footfall by five per cent as a result of the works, which are due to be completed in January 2016.
