Work starts on Liverpool theatre revamp
A groundbreaking ceremony has marked the start of work on a GBP28m redevelopment of the Everyman theatre in Liverpool, which has been designed by Haworth Tompkins Architects.
The Everyone for the Everyman project will include the creation of a 400-seat auditorium; a new creative hub for writers; rehearsal space; and improved front-of-house facilities.
A dedicated space for schools and community groups will also be established at the theatre, which is undergoing its first major refurbishment since the 1970s.
Funding has been provided by Arts Council England (GBP16.8m) and the European Regional Development Fund (GBP5.9m), plus the Northwest Regional Development Agency (GBP2.5m).
Meanwhile, a GBP200,000 contribution from the Peter Johnson Foundation is designed to act as the transition to a new campaign aimed at local people to contribute the remaining cash.
Everyman and Playhouse executive director Deborah Aydon said: "The new building will be a wonderful thing, but it is not the end of the story: it's the beginning of the next chapter.
"Funds raised through the Everyone for the Everyman appeal will also support the writers, actors, directors and designers of the future."
