ADP Architects will turn 19th century fort into mixed-use development

Plans have been announced for the redevelopment of a 19th century fort in Devon, UK. The scheme £16m (US$24m, €22m) will include a visitor attraction and learning centre, watersports and apartments.

Fort Bovisand was built in 1845 to defend the entrance to Plymouth Sound. It fort remained an active defence unit through the Napoleonic War and both World Wars before being mothballed by Britain's Ministry of Defence in 1956.

The proposal by ADP Architecture, which includes a visitor interpretation centre, a learning hub with outdoor and indoor spaces and temporary exhibition space, will also feature a number of apartments to cover development costs. In addition the fort will become a hub for water-based activities such as diving and surfing. A public consultation process has already commenced.

The attraction will be part-funded by the UK's Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which granted £350,000 (US$531,000, €479,000) in 2013 to “bring the fort's history to life".

A spokesperson told CLAD”We're now involved in the detailed development stage. This will lead to a second bid for additional money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the submission of a full planning application. We've engaged the architect, surveyors and designers - who will bring the interpretation element of the heritage area and the public spaces to life.”

The scheme will be delivered by the Fort Bovisand Trust and Fort Bovisand Developments. Work is scheduled to start in Q1 2016, with an opening date in 2018.
