Early February date for NGBs contesting UK Sport’s Tokyo 2020 funding decisions

by Matthew Campelli | 18 Jan 2017

Sporting organisations wishing to contest UK Sport’s funding decisions for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics cycle will be required to make representations to the quango’s board on 6 and 7 February.

Eight national governing bodies indicated their desire to appeal the funding body’s original decision by yesterday’s deadline (17 January).

They will now have just under three weeks to prepare for the hearings, which will occur in one-hour slots over the two day period.

UK Sport expects to reveal the outcome of the process towards the end of February.

Those who remain unsatisfied will then be able to make a formal appeal to Sport Resolutions UK (SRUK).

The governing bodies making representations are: Archery GB, Badminton England, British Fencing, Goalball UK, Table Tennis England, British Weightlifting and Powerlifting and Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby.

All seven of the sports were left out of UK Sport’s funding decisions, which were announced in December.

To be successful in their appeal, the governing bodies will have to show that original medal projections (mainly 0-1) were too modest, and that there is evidence to show they can win more accolades in Tokyo in three years time.

They will also have to show their adherence to the nine points within UK Sport’s Tokyo Investment Principles, which includes proof of investment in the sport and athletes, and demonstrations of “responsibility, accountability and partnership”, as well as improved medal projections.

Rod Carr, chair of UK Sport, will preside over the representations with the organisation’s 10-strong board.
