Streatham Hub leisure complex topped out

Building work on a new multi-million pound leisure development in Streatham, South London, has reached the topping out phase.

The Streatham Hub leisure complex will include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, a 13m learner pool, a 1,000-capacity ice rink, sports courts and a health and fitness club.

Scheduled to open later this year, the mixed-use complex will also feature a Tesco Extra supermarket, 250 new homes, a local transport hub and a range of public spaces.

Built by contractor Vinci Construction and designed by Michael Aukett Architects, the centre is one of only two in the world which will include the installation of a full-sized ice rink above a swimming pool space.

The cost of the development has been largely met by Tesco with the Lambeth Council contributing £19.42m.

Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth Council, said: "It's fantastic to see the Streatham Hub taking shape. In less than a year from now, top-class sports facilities will be coming back to Streatham.

"It's also great news that the project has created 600 new jobs plus valuable work placement opportunities for local young people."

Streatham will be the second new swimming pool opening in the borough in 12 months, following the opening of a pool in Lambeth.

The project was given the final go ahead in 2008, following an initial planning permission in 2002. Construction work has taken more than two years.
