Six Senses teams up with Dr Oz to develop Integrated Wellness programme

by Jane Kitchen | 08 Dec 2015

Six Senses Spas has teamed up with prominent doctors Dr Mehmet Oz, Dr Michael Breus and Dr Steven Gundry to develop Six Senses Integrated Wellness, which aims to address some of the most common issues people face in ultra-stressed daily lives.

Perhaps best known for his The Dr Oz Show American television programme, Dr Oz is also a professor at the Department of Surgery at Columbia University, directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and is the co-author of the popular You: Manual series of books.

Dr Breus, a fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, is a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, and Dr Gundry, the founder and director of The Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs, is a cardiac surgeon and nutrition specialist. The three doctors are all part of the Six Senses Wellness Board, which has spent two years developing the Integrated Wellness programme.

Through the programme, Six Senses' in-house team will measure and analyse key physiological biomarkers to provide guests with lifestyle and nutritional advice, and design a personalised programme of spa treatments, fitness and wellness activities based on the preventative principles of Eastern medicine and results-oriented Western influences.

The programme will focus on nutrition, to help guests understand the basic principles of healthy and nutritionally-balanced eating; sleep health, to optimise sleep and understand its benefits on their overall wellbeing; movement through the variation of high- and low-intensity exercise; alternative therapies; and holistic spa treatments, yoga, meditation and mindfulness, to balance the nervous system.

The ultimate goal, the company said, is to offer guests real benefits and guidance by providing in-depth information about their health and personalising every aspect of their stay to enhance their lives and wellbeing.

A personalised programme includes one wellness screening, one spa treatment per day, one private wellness or fitness activity per day, access to spa facilities and complimentary access to selected group wellness classes.

Each personalised wellness programme begins with a wellness screening, which uses a finger oximeter to observe the heart rate, tissue oxygen uptake and distribution, arterial stiffness and stress parameters.

The screening technology also uses the Electro Interstitial Scan-Galvanic Skin system, which provides useful information by measuring and interpreting resistance to the flow of a gentle electric current through interstitial fluid – or fluid between the cells – throughout the body. It will also use bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA, a widely recognised technique for estimating body composition.

Consultants will take this information, along with in-depth discussions about the guest’s lifestyle, concerns and personal goals, and recommend a personalised wellness programme, including daily spa treatments, fitness and wellness activities, as well as nutritional advice. Screenings are conducted by an educated, experienced wellness professional, the company said.

The programmes are designed to help address the most common concerns around digestion, weight loss, elimination of built-up toxins, weakened immune system, sleep, stress relief, muscle toning or building better stamina.

At the end of the stay, guests receive a post-programme follow-up consultation with advice and tools to continue a healthy lifestyle at home. Six Senses said the underlying principle of this approach is for guests to take charge of their health, while experiencing joy and fulfillment in what they do.

Six Senses Integrated Wellness is available at Six Senses Zighy Bay, Six Senses Laamu, Six Senses Yao Noi and Six Senses Douro Valley, as well as partner Six Senses spas at Puente Romano Resort & Spa in Marbella, Al Bustan Palace in Oman, Soneva Kiri in Thailand, and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives.

Six Senses Yao Noi and Six Senses Spa at Soneva Kiri also incorporate a performance test with Fusionetics, an evidence-based sports science platform to help guests understand, monitor and improve their personal fitness levels.
