Mountain wildflowers underpin spa rituals at newly-launched Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern

by Megan Whitby | 30 Sep 2022

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group (MOHG) has unveiled its new Swiss destination Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern, after an extensive renovation of one of the city’s Belle Epoque era landmarks.

The overhaul project was overseen by local architects Iwan Bühler Architekten and London-based interior designers Jestico + Whiles. Their joint vision was to preserve the building’s history and heritage while delivering a contemporary design inspired by the beauty of the surrounding Swiss landscapes.

Overlooking the shores of Lake Lucerne and with views over the Swiss Alps, the 136-key hotel is equipped with a modern wellness facility called Spa Bellefontaine.

The space was designed to be a rejuvenating Swiss-inspired wellness sanctuary. It provides face and body treatments supplied by native beauty brand Swiss Bellefontaine.

Bellefontaine is known for its signature complex, Edelgen, which is claimed to stimulate the skin’s defence system and block the release of free radicals. Edelgen is made from the extract of the iconic Swiss mountain flower edelweiss. The compound is claimed to promote intense antioxidant action, encourage extra collagen and elastin production, strengthen the skin’s barrier and delay the visible ageing process.

The Spa Bellefontaine menu offers guests a selection of facials, massages, body wraps and scrubs, as well as anti-ageing-focused procedures such as cold plasma therapy, collagen rituals and acid peels.

Wellness facilities include a sauna, steam bath, experiential showers and a relaxation room, as well as a 24/7 fitness studio with Life Fitness equipment.

Additional spa partners on board include Gharieni which provided three of its MO1 Evo spa tables and three RLX relaxation loungers.

Alongside the spa, the property also features event spaces and four restaurants and bars under the patronage of Michelin star experienced executive chef Gilad Peled.

Having grown from its Asian roots into a global brand, MOHG now operates 36 hotels and seven residences in 24 countries and territories, with each property designed to reflect the group’s Eastern heritage and unique sense of place.

Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern, marks the brand’s second Swiss property and joins its existing Geneva destination.

MOHG has a strong pipeline of hotels and residences under development and is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group.
