Video: Mercedes-Benz Stadium rated most sustainable in the world

With this achievement we have a powerful new platform to showcase to the industry that building sustainably and responsibly is possible for a venue of any type, size and scale
– Arthur Blank, owner and chairman, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, has become the first sports stadium in the world to achieve platinum certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

With a highly advanced stormwater management system and enough solar panels to power nine NFL games, the new home of the Atlanta Falcons and MLS team Atlanta United scored a record 88 points in its rating by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

“We set out to build a venue that would not only exceed expectations but also push the limits of what’s possible in terms of stadium design, fan experience and sustainability,” said Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United owner and chairman Arthur Blank.

“We set a goal of achieving the highest LEED rating because it was the right thing to do for our city and the environment.

“With this achievement, we have a powerful new platform to showcase to the industry that building sustainably and responsibly is possible for a venue of any type, size and scale.”

Opened in August, the two-million square foot (609,600sq m) venue is already renowned for its bold design by lead architect HOK.

However, sustainable solutions for water, lighting and energy conservation, as well as community programmes, also play a major part and will significantly reduce operational costs.

It becomes the first sports stadium to receive all LEED water category credits, using 47 per cent less water than baseline standards, thanks to water-efficient fixtures, a sophisticated storm management system and conservation infrastructure.

It has 4,000 solar PV panels and LED lighting within its floodlights and big screens which will last 10 times longer than standard lights, reducing energy usage by as much as 60 per cent.

Other green initiatives include a partnership with Trees Atlanta to share captured rainwater for tree irrigation, a bike valet programme on event days, EV charging stations for up to 48 electric cars, and walking paths connecting local communities.

“By achieving LEED Platinum, Mercedes Benz Stadium is showing fans and the larger Atlanta community that the leadership is committed to creating a space that is healthier and more sustainable,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC and Green Business Certification.

“We commend Mr Blank and his team for raising the bar for their industry, creating a better experience for fans, and for helping to transform the built environment.”

Blank and the project team will be presented with a LEED Platinum plaque on the field before Atlanta Falcons’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on 26 November.
