McFit eyes growth in Europe and beyond

by Deven Pamben | 19 Apr 2017

Low-cost fitness operator McFit is primed to grow its brand further in Germany, Europe and into other parts of the world.

In an interview in the latest edition of Health Club Management, Pierre Geinsensetter, McFit spokesperson, said that only 12 per cent of the population in Germany is exercising in gyms or health clubs, meaning that there is "plenty of opportunity for further growth".

The fitness market in the country grew by 4.2 per cent last year.

According to figures released by EuropeActive, McFit has 1.5million members in Europe, making it the largest operator on the continent in terms of memberships.

As well has clubs in Germany (184), it also has facilities in Spain (32), Italy (26), Austria (14), Poland (10) and Hungary (1).

Geinsensetter said: "Looking beyond Germany, we also see a lot of potential across Europe. The market is changing, with growing interests in fitness orientated lifestyles. We've just opened more clubs in Poland and Italy and have three more coming up in Spain."

When asked about opening operations beyond Europe, he said: "We're thinking about that for sure. If you're the biggest player in Europe, it's only natural to think about how you may take your operation overseas. But right now, we're just taking a look at the market."
