Luton Town finds new stadium site

by Matthew Campelli | 21 Dec 2015

Luton Town Football Club (LTFC) will submit a formal application for its new stadium in 2016 after choosing its preferred site following a period of consultation.

The League Two club is eyeing up Power Court, a redundant piece of land close to rail, bus and road links, as the location of its new home.

Earlier this year it had earmarked and purchased a plot of land south of Stockwood Park adjacent to Junction 10 of the M1, but following the process of consultation - which lasted between 26 October and 7 December 2015 - that land is now likely to be developed as a mixed-use site for offices and hotels, and will help enable the development of the site at Power Court.

Building a new home has been a priority for the club’s owners, the 2020 Group, since it purchased LTFC in 2008. Kenilworth Road, its current ground, has been its home for 110 years.

“Everyone at the club has a great deal of affection for Kenilworth Road. However, our need to move to a more suitable location with better facilities and a larger capacity is no secret,” said LTFC chief executive Gary Sweet.

“We strongly believe that by developing a stadium in the centre of Luton, we will be best placed to continue this work and increase the value that we are able to bring to local people.”

LTFC is currently in discussions with British Land and Luton Borough Council, as well as its partners the University of Bedfordshire, St Mary’s Church and The Mall, ahead of the project.
