Rio 2016 medal winners elected to BOA Athletes’ Commission

by Matthew Campelli | 18 Nov 2016

Olympic gold medallist Joanna Rowsell Shand has been appointed as one of the five new members of the British Olympic Association’s (BOA) Athletes’ Commission.

The velodrome cyclist has been elected at the same time as sprinter Adam Gemili, rugby sevens star James Rodwell, swimmer Lizzie Simmonds and skeleton competitor Lizzy Yarnold.

Katherine Grainger, who picked up a silver medal for rowing at Rio 2016, has also been re-elected.

They join existing Commission members, including chair Ben Hawes (hockey), Adam Pengilly (skeleton), Eric Boateng (basketball), Jon Eley (short track speed skating), Sarah Gosling (sailing), Claire Hamilton (curling), Nathan Robertson (badminton) and Goldie Sayers (athletics).

The BOA Athletes’ Commission was originally formed in 2010, and was created for athletes to provide feedback and expertise when the body is devising initiatives and programmes. The Commission meets every two months.

More than 800 eligible Olympians voted in the election, and Hawes said the process had been a “success”.

“Having a broad range of sports, experiences and viewpoints is hugely important in helping deliver for the athlete community and we now look forward to contributing to the success of Team GB at Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and beyond,” he added.
