Architects shortlisted to redesign Japan's National Stadium

by Aoife Dowling | 01 Nov 2012

The Japan Sport Council has shortlisted 11 architects to redesign Japan's new 80,000-seat Kasumigaoka National Stadium.

The stadium will need to be complete in time for the country's staging of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and as part of Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.

The finalists include Olympic stadium designers Zaha Hadid Architects and Populous.

The competition, which received a total of 46 applicants, restricted entry to practices that had been recipients of the Pritzker Prize, an AIA gold medal, UIA gold medal, Praemium Imperiale or RIBA gold medal.

Applicants were also required to have experience of designing a stadium with a capacity of 15,000 or more.

The successful bidder will be announced at the end of November.

Jury chair, Japanese architect Tadao Ando, said: "The site conditions pose a challenge in requiring an enormous facility for 80,000 people to be composed spatially into a narrow site.

"The project is expected to not only organise the surrounding traffic, manage the circulation of large bodies of people, and offer an exciting experience for spectators, but also to demonstrate the technology of the highest level to support an operable roof and adjustable seating that will be needed to facilitate a multi-layered programme."
