@Bristol plans expansion
The @Bristol Millennium Project in the south west of England has revealed plans for an expansion programme after beating its visitor targets. The venue - which includes the Explore science centre and Imaginarium, the newly re-branded Wilkwalk attraction (formerly Wildscreen) and an IMAX Theatre -is bidding for £4m of public and private money to further improve its attractions and pull in more customers. Having only opened in July 2000, the @Bristol complex was aiming to attract around 450,000 visitors in the first 12 months. But with only a month to go before its first anniversary, 700,000 people have already passed through the doors. A further 150,000 are anticipated by July. @Bristol chair, Nicholas Hood says work could start as early as this summer, as the bid is being put to Bristol City Council, the Millennium Commission, the South West Regional Development Agency and private companies, who supported the original £100m project. The work will include repairing current exhibits and fitting new attractions; making the Wilkwalk entrance more visible; fitting further signage and guest amenities, and improving ventilation in the botanical house. Wildwalk was the venue for a Behind The Scenes tour organised by the European chapter of the Themed Entertainment Association. See July AM for full report.
