Immersive Super Nintendo World will put visitors inside Nintendo’s games
– Thierry Coup
New details have been revealed about the immersive, game-themed Super Nintendo World, which is due to open at Universal Studios Japan in Tokyo this summer.
The theme park land has been conceived for visitors to feel as if they are playing inside their favourite Nintendo video games and will feature Nintendo’s well-known worlds, characters and adventures.
Technology and design will be used to blend the physical world with a digital, video game layer, offering interactive gameplay throughout the land.
In addition to enjoying rides, shops and restaurants, guests will be able to use a wearable wrist band – called a Power Up Band – and a specially designed app to interact with their surroundings.
They will need to make use of their arms, hands and entire bodies as they explore the new area, making them feel like they are truly part of the video game world.
Thierry Coup, senior vice president and chief creative officer of Universal Creative, said: "Super Nintendo World is a life-sized living videogame. We created a whole new level of play by creating the Power Up Band, which will connect guests to dozens of iconic Nintendo items throughout the world in a truly seamless and innovative way.
"The app will keep track of their adventures and any items earned along the way such as coins. There are many many items in the land to play and interact with."
Although designs of the land have yet to be released, a music video to promote the attraction that accompanied the announcement provides some conceptual insights into what visitors might be able to expect.
