Meet the Muppets: Atlanta puppetry museum ready to to re-open following $14m expansion

After a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation, the Center of Puppetry Arts is opening its doors again.

The museum, which is devoted to puppets of the world and boasts a large collection of items by renowned puppeteer and Muppets creator Jim Henson, first opened in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1978.

The global design and production company Thinkwell Group is behind the 7,500sq ft (697sqm) expansion, which cost US$14m (£9.3m, €12.9m).

Half of the space will house a new interactive exhibition space built around Henson’s puppets and props, more than 500 of which were donated by his family in 2007. Well loved characters such as Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie will be on display.

The exhibit “will follow Henson’s prolific imagination chronologically, transporting visitors through environments that typified the master puppeteer’s world such as Jim’s Office and the Television Studio,” the museum says. Henson was a supporter of the museum throughout his life.

Aside from the Henson story and Muppets artefacts, visitors can also enjoy the the Center of Puppetry Arts’ Global Collection. The puppets in this exhibit explain the role of puppets in different cultures around the world.

The centre officially opens on 14 November, and rumours abound that a famous Muppet could be cutting the ribbon.
