Kerzner expanding Atlantis resort brand with plans for Hawaii destination

China Oceanwide and Kerzner International Holdings have announced plans to develop a multi-million dollar mixed-use resort development in Hawaii, with the expansive 642-acre project the latest in Kerzner’s global expansion of its Atlantis brand.

Located in Ko Olina, the mega-development will be the first Atlantis-branded resort in the US, following on from the landmark The Palm in Dubai and the upcoming Sanya Hainan in China, which opens in 2017.

Overlooking the Honu and Kohola Lagoons, 26 acres of the Atlantis development will be dedicated to entertainment and experiences, with plans for an Aquaventure Waterpark, The Ambassador Lagoon and The Lost Chambers Aquarium. Alongside a number of bars and dining venues, the ocean-themed destination will also include fresh and saltwater pools, and marine exhibits, including an open air marine habitat.

The resort will be made up of 800 guest rooms and suites, with 524 luxury residences also planned. The resort will also house a spa, which will fuse traditional and holistic practices with modern therapies, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness centre. Event space will also be available for both large and small gatherings.

The development will also offer the state’s largest private deep-draft marina, world-class golf and sports facilities, and shopping and retail centres.

According to Kerzner, Atlantis Ko Olina’s design will be “inspired by Hawaii’s legacy of ocean exploration”, with the design celebrating the natural elements of Hawaii’s environment, landscape and architecture.

“This project is extremely exciting for the State of Hawaii and will undoubtedly enhance the entire destination experience at Ko Olina,” said Jeffrey R. Stone, The Resort Group's founder and master developer of Ko Olina.

“A project of this scope and quality will heighten Oahu's recognition as a luxury destination for years to come and broaden Hawaii’s appeal to affluent travellers from around the world, including the discerning millennial market.”

Once complete, Atlantis Ko Olina will generate an estimated US$6.3bn (€6bn, £5bn) in economic impact for the city and state, supporting approximately 30,000 permanent jobs in the process.
