BodyHoliday confirms details of expansion, including second resort in Portugal
– Andrew Barnard, CEO, SunSwept Resorts
BodyHoliday has confirmed it is expanding the brand and developing its first European property in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve, which is set to open in 2029.
BodyHoliday Algarve will be a sister destination to the operator’s flagship 155-key resort in St Lucia. This property marks the first step in a programme to create a collection of BodyHoliday resorts.
A new executive team has been chosen to lead the brand’s expansion.
Since the original Caribbean property first opened in 1988, it has offered an all-inclusive experience with opportunities to train with pro-athletes and industry experts, plus daily spa treatments and activities. Its brand promise is: “Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.”
Portugal
The new Portuguese property will be located next to the protected coastal lagoon and nature reserve called Ria Formosa, with direct access to the beach, Praia da Lota.
The site is being designed by architects Gensler, with interior design by Clodagh and the Clodagh Design Team. The 26-acre site will have 175 units of accommodation in addition to a spa and wellness centre that measures 40,000sq ft and will have more than 40 treatment rooms.
There will also be a cutting-edge fitness complex, multiple pools, a lush garden, a FIFA-standard football field, a racquet sport centre and the BodyHoliday signature fitness programmes.
The property will also have five dining venues.
Expansion leadership
The brand’s expansion will be led by Andrew Barnard, CEO of SunSwept Resorts (which comprises BodyHoliday and another beachfront resort in St Lucia called StolenTime).
“While we’ve always taken pride in the distinctive values and personal touch that come with being a family business, we’re now building a world-class team dedicated to expanding and managing a growing collection of BodyHoliday resorts across multiple destinations,” said Barnard.
“This evolution enables us to preserve the heritage and wellness philosophy at the core of who we are, while positioning the brand for sustainable growth and long-term success. BodyHoliday has always been a reflection of what we hold most dear as a team – movement, adventure, joy and the power of human connection.”
Other members of the executive team include COO Indu Brar, known for his work in hospitality operations for Fairmont Hotels and Resorts; CFO Jean-Charles Denis, who has spent a decade working in finance for IHG; and project director Kevin Bundy, known for leading the construction and development of Battersea Power Station in London and the development of Soho House in Europe.
Non-executive board members include non-executive directors Mia Kyricos, a leading wellness industry figure and Alice Avis, a business leader with experience in consumer, beauty and wellness. Strategic international real estate advisor Jeremy Plummer will be the chair.
