SHoP Architects design 'dancing' New York towers with suspended skybridge pool

Construction is nearing completion on a pair of “dancing” copper towers in New York, which will be connected by a skybridge with a swimming pool 300ft above the ground.

New York studio SHoP Architects have designed the towers, called the American Copper Buildings, by the city’s East River. The upper halves of both structures lean outward, creating a dynamic, musically-inspired interaction between the two which is emphasised by the bridge that links them.

The copper cladding, which will gradually turn green as the metal reacts with the elements, is now being added and construction is slated for completion in early 2017.

The towers, which reach 41 and 48 stories, will feature 761 luxury apartments, and according to developer JDS Development Group there will also be “an amenity package that sets a new benchmark for rental development.”

Leisure in the towers will include a fitness centre with elevated ceilings and a climbing wall, a rooftop deck and infinity pool and a spa with a Turkish-style marble hammam, while the three-storey skybridge will feature a lengthy swimming pool, a lounge, a hot tub and a bar.

Skypools are currently in vogue, with engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan currently creating a transparent suspended pool between two residential towers in London for Irish developer Ballymore.

SHoP are currently working on a number of large projects, including a radical expansion of SITE Santa Fe, one of the most respected contemporary arts venues in the US.
