Plans for a £5m arts venue in Hornsea are now in doubt due to a lack of funding.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC), which approved the plans in May, has agreed to put up £3m of the fundin but is still awaiting a funding decision from Yorkshire Forward on the remaining £2m.

Stephen Parnaby, leader of the council, said: “The council will of course continue to do all it can to support this project but the outlook for the new centre in its present form is not good.

“Unfortunately a lot of local wrangling and delay eventually led Yorkshire Forward to commission an independent study which decisively concluded that the council’s preferred site and not the existing Floral Hall site was the right choice and the one that met Yorkshire Forward’s criteria for support, but in the meantime valuable time was lost.

“If we could have moved faster, I am confident we could have got the funding package sorted and been on with the job to the benefit of Hornsea residents and visitors.”

A 313sq m (3,369sq ft) auditorium capable of accommodating 300 people, a 65sq m (700sq ft) stage area and changing facilities are among the plans for the new Hornsea venue.

The facility will also include a bar area, a 96sq m (1,033sq ft) function room with access to an outdoor terrace area, a café and a reception area capable of providing exhibition space.

ERYC architects worked in partnership with artist Chris Tipping on designs for the proposed venue, along with touring theatre group Hull Truck and amateur theatre society HATS.
