£39m Mumbles pier plans put on display

Plans for the £39m transformation of Mumbles Pier near Swansea into a "21st century visitor destination" have been put on display by the historic attraction's owners.

Ameco staged a two-day public exhibition on 18 and 19 June in the Pier Hotel ballroom near the pier entrance in order to allow residents to view the proposals, which are now ready for submission. The project will include the restoration of the Victorian pier, a resort hotel, apartments, boardwalks, public spaces, cafés and restaurants, as well as a leisure and family entertainment destination.

Ameco said that upgrading the 112-year-old attraction will also allow the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to move forward with a scheme to build a new lifeboat house to launch its new Tamar class vessel. It is hoped that proceeds from a redevelopment of the foreshore will help to fund the restoration of the pier and creation of a new visitor destination, with Ameco hoping to receive the green light by the end of the year.

Ameco managing director John Bollom said: "Over the years, we looked at how we could find a cost-effective method of rebuilding the pier. Sadly, privately owned piers do not qualify for heritage funding and the local authority has other restoration priorities such as Oystermouth Castle. "We therefore had to find a privately-funded solution to generate £3m for replacement costs and when the Swansea Bay Action Plan was published in 2007, we saw it as a marvellous opportunity to blend our restoration plans with public sector ambitions to boost regional tourism."
