Work starts on Plymouth park scheme
Construction work on the creation of a new adventure play world at Devonport Park in Plymouth, Devon, has got underway.
The scheme will see play equipment installed in three zones, Highlands, Lowlands and Middlelands areas, which have been specially designed by Bristol-based Atkins. A new sensory garden will also be created, along with the installation of new poles, paths and seating areas. A timber playhouse, seesaws, a nest swing and play telephones for toddlers will be installed in the Highlands space, while the main Middlelands play area will feature rough-and-tumble equipment such as a zip wire, a tractor tyre swing and climbing ropes.
The Lowlands will include climbing equipment, netting and a youth pod for young people to relax in, and the whole adventure park will be situated in a more central location, near to the proposed café, to improve accessibility from local neighbourhoods. Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership (DRCP) is contributing more than £300,000 towards the new play area, part of a wider £5.3m programme of work to restore the park. In October last year, the National Lottery awarded the project a £3.3m grant, while Plymouth City Council (PCC) is also providing funding.
PCC cabinet member for streetscene and environmental regulation, Michael Leaves, said: "This is going to be an amazing adventure playground and will have something for all ages and abilities." Blakedown Landscapes is carrying out the work, which is expected to be completed by Easter. Equipment is being supplied by Timberplay.
