WNC unveils £24m redevelopment plans

West Nottinghamshire College (WNC) has announced "once-in-a-generation" plans for a £24m redevelopment of its Derby Road campus in Mansfield.

A new sports hall with badminton and basketball courts; a sports science lab; a refreshment and viewing area; and changing facilities forms part of the extensive proposals. The Taylor Young-designed project is also set to include a two/three-storey building to house 4,000sq m (43,056sq ft) of additional teaching space, plus a health spa and a training hair and beauty salon.

Improvements to an existing three-storey block will enable the college's visual arts to move from the Chesterfield Road site, while an enclosed courtyard is also proposed. WNC is looking to submit a planning application in June ahead of further consultation, with work scheduled to start on the sports hall in September.

"The rejuvenated college will act as a symbol of the area's pride, ambitions and aspirations for the 21st century," said WNC principal and chief executive Asha Khemka. It is anticipated that the overall scheme will be completed by September 2013.
